Kids and Teens Learning Safe Movement

One of the priorities with all Fitter Futures programs is for our kids and teens learning safe movement.

“Just because you can, doesn’t mean you should”.  It’s a phrase we are not afraid to use in our gym when coaching kids and adults.

We understand that kids and teens (and often adults too) are keen to progress to a more challenging load. For example, going from a body weight movement (using a broomstick), to using a weighted bar.  Or increasing the weight of a kettlebell or barbell.

We prioritise safety in movement.  Which means athletes (young or old) have to ‘earn to right’ to increase intensity (such as load) by demonstrating that they can consistently replicate good movement. That doesn’t mean doing 1 good rep. It means rep after rep, set after set.

An athlete might say to me “Coach can I add some weight because I can lift more”.  But if we haven’t seen enough consistency in repetitions free of movement faults, then we’ll we deny the request and explain to the athlete what they need to do in order to ‘earn the right’ to progress.

Because “just because you can, doesn’t mean you should”.   That’s how we keep our athletes safe.
